Ardbert would like to add:

“This is a catchup nameday. Because after over a hundred years of being a companionless spirit, I'm now undead! Not the zombie kind, the no longer dead kind. That's a pretty big thing—enough to warrant its own celebration, aye? No weird, uncomfortable soliloquies, I promise! But I don't promise I won't get a bit wet in the eyes when my happiness, and the alcohol, get the better of me.

Because one ale will take me out and then your collective kindness will likely finish me off. So, thank you for being my friends. You've made this second life special.

P.S.: Bring alcohol. We will be toasting LIFE!”

Hello,

Ardbert and I will be having our wedding on the twelfth day of the twelfth month. 12/12.

♡ (*˘⌣˘)人(˘⌣˘*) ♡

The ceremony will be private, but the reception will be open to all who wish to attend so long as we are contacted at least a sennight in advance.

With that said I will now fulfill a promise I made some time ago and share a tale from my home.

The Dragonsong War

Long ago, near the beginning of the Sixth Astral Era, a group of Halone-worshipping tribes sought to settle in the northern lands of Coerthas. The Dravanians had lived there for eons before and had no desire to give up their territory to mankind, for it was they who killed the Dawn Wyrm, Bahamut, near three thousand years prior.

Thus did a fierce conflict begin, until Hraesvelgr of the First Brood and an elezen maiden named Shiva fell in love. The love they held for each other was pure and true, but as her life is but a blink of an eye compared to the ageless dragons, she besought Hraesvelgr to devour her so her soul would be entwined with his for eternity.

Though reluctant at first, Hraesvelgr honored Shiva's request and their bittersweet romance inspired an alliance between man and dragon. Together they built a paradise in the clouds, and for two hundred years they prospered. For two hundred years they lived in peace.

The peace was ended when King Thordan I and his followers killed Ratatoskr, the most trusting of the First Brood, and devoured her eyes that they might claim her power as their own. Through the calming influence of Shiva's soul, Hraesvelgr was able to maintain a level head and see the folly in vengeance, though the same could not be said for their brood-brother, Nidhogg.

Nidhogg attempted to avenge her and Thordan and four of the knights were slain. Haldrath, Thordan's son, defeated Nidhogg by gouging out his eyes. Haldrath abdicated the throne out of remorse, taking Nidhogg's eyes with him and becoming the first Azure Dragoon, spending the rest of his life fighting off Dravanian attempts of revenge.

Haldrath was later buried with Nidhogg's right eye, while the left was wielded by subsequent Azure Dragoons in defense of Ishgard.

Without his eyes Nidhogg had no strength to avenge Ratatoskr, and so he told Hraesvelgr of the treachery so to receive his brood-brother's eye and continue his campaign of vengeance against the descendants of Thordan and his Knights Twelve — the people of the Holy See of Ishgard.

Over time, Nidhogg grew strong. Strong enough to wipe Ishgard off the face of the map if he so desired, but this was not enough for him. He didn't want them to simply die. He wanted them to suffer for what they had done to his brood-sister.

And thus the Dragonsong War was born.

Ishgard's people were raised in a culture with the belief that Nidhogg and his brood were attacking them merely for encroaching upon his territory, never knowing the truth of the grand betrayal of their ancestors. They fought with a conviction brought on by lies and countless lives were lost over the course of the war, both Ishgardian and Dravanian.

While Hraesvelgr did not seek active vengeance for his beloved brood-sister he also did not prevent Nidhogg's endless rampage.

It was not until a thousand years later that he was approached by a lone adventurer and their companions, seeking his aid in ending the war and saving their friend, the Azure Dragoon of their generation. Together they had slain Nidhogg's flesh, but Nidhogg's spirit lived on through his eyes — the one he recovered, and the one the Azure Dragoon wielded — allowing the Black Wyrm to possess the dragoon's form.

Reluctant at first, Hraesvelgr eventually tested their strength and resolve by challenging them in combat.

The Adventurer's companions each faced a trial put forth by one of the White Wyrm's children, though the Adventurer's test was to face Hraesvelgr himself in combat. Unwilling to falter, the Adventurer fought fiercely, knowing that without Hraesvelgr's help countless more lives — man and dragon alike — would be lost. That the Azure Dragoon would be lost. And they refused to lose yet another beloved friend.

In the end, the Adventurer's unwavering will saw them through that test of resolve.

Seeing the strength the trio brought to bear, Hraesvelgr agreed to put his faith in mankind one last time, and pledged an alliance with Ishgard to stop the final chorus of the Dragonsong War.

When Nidhogg laid siege to the Steps of Faith just outside Ishgard's walls, Hraesvelgr and the Adventurer arrived to challenge him. His attempts to persuade Nidhogg into letting go of his hatred were for naught, and the great wyrms dueled in the skies. Though they seemed evenly matched, Nidhogg eventually managed to overpower and gravely wound Hraesvelgr. Wishing to free his brood-brother, the Hraesvelgr gave the Adventurer one of his eyes, granting them the power to challenge and defeat Nidhogg.

With Hraesvelgr's aid the Adventurer managed to end the wyrm's reign of terror, destroying his spirit, freeing both Ishgard and Nidhogg's brood from his madness, and returning the Azure Dragoon to them.

My words cannot do this tale or its numerous heroes involved justice, so I shall end with some borrowed from my father's memoirs:

“And so it was that the winds of gentle revolution came to stir. [...] Thus were the notes of the Dragonsong rewritten, the din of war giving way to a rising litany of peace and hope.”
