Would anyone be interested in doing some sparring? Either weapons or magical is fine.

I already feel like I'm getting rusty here, and I really can't let that happen.

I would even be interested in a running partner. Especially if someone knew a good path to run maybe?

I don't have any of my weapons here, but I wouldn't mind staying in shape.

Depending on how complex they are, I might be able to sort of replicate them...

Really? That is interesting... Only one of them was particularly different. The other was a gun; Although I doubt this place would see a need for those here.

Ah, I don't think I'm talented enough to make a gun. Too many moving parts.

I run quite a bit. I've found five or good paths that I could take you on.

I doubt it. I do occasionally go to a shooting range, but I don't use them for sparring.

I don't have a bladed weapon, but I don't mind sparring still as long as you're okay that I just use my staff. I've thought about trying to learn how to use a sword at one point, but it's never happened.

If it's a challenge, then it's fine by me. We'll need to talk about abilities beforehand to see if one of us needs hold back, just to be safe.

Right. I'll just take you try out the paths I like, then you can run on your own or we can run together so long as you don't mind me being poor at conversing. I get really into it.

People aren't supposed to get hurt when you spar. That's the entire point of it. You keep your skills hidden from people who are actually trying to hurt you, not those who are trying to help you.

Running in silence is really probably better for me anyway.

I knew I liked you for a reason! To the silent running but more so about how to spar. The better you know your party members, the better you can fight together. We're much stronger together than apart.

[Party members? Fighting as a group is definitely not something that Devon has experienced before, unless you count being attacked by multiple people at one time. Then he's experienced it a lot.]

Like you said, somewhere we won't accidentally destroy anything. There's a spot out by the wall that's pretty empty and secluded. It's where I'm been going to practice on my own.

To spare you from that: where I come from, it's best for adventurers to work in groups. Keeps you alive.

Oh. I guess I could understand that. There are certainly moments where I'm from where working in a group would be nice. Definitely safer at least.

As long as you're cautious, many things can be conquered alone. Maybe the rules and magic of your world allow you to go without, even. But where I'm from—and the worlds related to it—the heavy hitters and the healers need people like me to take the hits.

Different folks, different strokes, but that's where my thoughts come from.

So your group has warriors of different types?

[That's rather unheard of in Devon's world. There's not a lot of crossover between different warrior branches.]

Ha, let's see if I can keep it short. There are different types of people who can fight: those that take the damage, those that deal the damage physically, those that do it with magic, and those that heal damage with their magic. Of course, the ones that take it and the ones that heal it should be doing damage, too.

Being a Warrior, I use an axe and take all the attention off the others. They can't take a beating, but I can. ... Mind you, I gotta be careful unless I have a healer at my back, but I can still do a lot on my own.

You mean you all... work together? And different types of warriors attack each other?

[That last part is a little bit unsettling, the fact that different types of warriors attack each other. It's the big thing the magicians of old have feared for a long time. Of course there's some hope in the fact that Ardbert makes it sound like different types of warriors interact regularly for a variety of reasons, and that definitely doesn't happen much where Devon is from.]

Warriors are a specific job. 'Fighters' are a better general term.

But we work together, aye. Normally we only fought monsters and similar ilk. And sometimes the monsters were people, if you get the drift.

Huh. That's just a term we use for all of us where I'm from. We're all warrior clans, it's just a question of what type of warrior you are.

We use the term 'warrior' generally, too, except when it comes to talking about specifics. Makes my head hurt sometimes.

Ha, what sorts do you have?

More than I can probably list. I've had direct contact with many clans of mages, as well as ninja clans, dragon riders, warrior animals, and swordsmen. I know there are also quite a few robotic, mechanical, and faerie species though I've never met any of them.

Quite a variety there. We have mages and swordsmen of different types. On Era's world, they've got proper dragons. Ninjas, too. No real robots, save a few. The dwarves and Daedalus Stoneworks, which makes stone robot-like things.

... I have to ask. Are your fae folk the terrifying kind or just mischievous?

I haven't had a lot of real experience with them. The one I have met was lightly teasing and rather kind.
