[Video] All that we See or Seem is but a Dream within a Dream

[When the video starts, those who know Regis might notice that his face is a little redder than it usually is. He's also wrapped in what looks his own cloak and a heavy riding cloak, one that a person would expect to see out in the frozen wastes, not in a city like Havenwell. Honestly, he looks a little silly all curled into the cloaks as he is, but since waking up out in the backyard under Peter's silver apple tree, he has yet to shake off the cold. It might be a long process considering he has no idea how long he was out there.

Actually, considering he usually puts off heat like a furnace and still feels this cold, he has an idea and it's one he doesn't like. Cor would have his head if he was still here.]

Those who have been here for a while know that we have been communicated with through dreams before.

[Who could forget the strange warning that came before the break in last October?]

I think it may be happening again. How many people are having dreams with the ghosts who visited us in them? And how many of them are talking to you? Mine had quite a lot to say and in regard to something I have investigated before.

[He takes a moment to fight back a shiver and then quotes what he remembers from the dream, once again grateful for how good his memory is. His hands had been shaking too hard for him to write anything down when he first returned to the house.]

"The world began as thus: it was a rock. He came upon it first, and loved it immediately, this empty rock where nothing lived. He burrowed deep inside and devoured it inch by inch, teeth breaking upon the surface and growing anew. Through Him, over time, the stone became soil. The soil grew fertile through His work, yet all was still naught but rock and soil.

Then the Winged Lord appeared, uncertain of the path He was to walk. He was hungry, so He clawed at the stone to find where His prey crawled."

The natives have just remembered the Winged Lord for some reason, but we still don't know who the first "He" is. Could "He" be trying to contact us in some way in order to keep things in some kind of balance? I am very curious to hear what everyone thinks.

[The video ends here, but once he is done with that Regis sends out two quick texts.]

By the time you get this, I am certain you will have seen my video post. Would you be willing to work with me on a new investigation if I started one? We have talked before of how strange it is the natives are now remembering the Winged Lord. How far behind do you think his fellow is?

"The Crawling One"...

This would seem to be a variation on a tale we have been told before. Previously it was described as them playing a 'game' of sorts, and the Winged Lord loved the life that was created and the Crawling One loathed it, the the Crawling One using the dead to feed.

In this version is sounds as though the Winged Lord was hungry and it was not a game.

i'm not right often, but when it happens i find i don't much care for it

Perhaps it's safe to assume that first "he" is the "Crawling One"? [ As Besithia has already mentioned. ] The Crawling One, another deity who burrowed into the earth and nested, drawing death to him, and who also, um.... poetically put, turned dirt into poison.

The message I received isn't so elaborate, but it did mention keeping balance, and that a "he" will not allow anyone to die.

"Balance must always be kept. Nothing shall die here that He does not allow. Your sacrifice is balance, and balance must always be kept. Some must die or all shall perish. These were their promises and their demise."

These dreams have happened before?

[It must have been before he arrived here.

Anyway. Hi. Resident death kid who definitely touched ghosts and had dreams, here with his terrible camera skills.]

I've been having them too. Mine also had something to say about a Winged Lord and some other being. I tried to write it down...Um.

[There's some rustling as he looks for something, and when he speaks again it's much more halting. Fortunately, years of memorizing playing cards and prophecies paid off.]

"He dug deeper and called the dead to join Him while the Winged Lord spread life further and deeper upon the surface. So the two chose their domains.

In the core of the star, He nested. The dying sank to Him and He welcomed them with open jaws, ever hungry. Their bodies became the rock, became the soil, and so grew anew. Above the world, the Winged Lord circled, delighting in all that He had brought. But a deep sadness came upon Him as he watched them sink into the soil, going to His friend, His enemy, the one which He could not reach."

[By the Six, he looks so much younger. And so wonderfully alive that it takes a moment for her to reconcile what she sees with what she remembers last of him. But when she speaks, her voice is steady and laced with respectful affection.]

I've little to say on the matter of dreams, but I will say this: it is good to see you again, Your Majesty.

[Regis nods as he listens, though Verstael cannot see it.]

I thought I remembered as much, but I don't have my notes with me at the moment. Of course, if this is coming from the side of the 'prey' they are less likely to see it as a game. Usually, they are the party at a disadvantage, struggling just to survive. They have no time for games.

[There is a short pause as a thought hits him.]

Verstael, you've been gathering information since you got here. Has any of what you've found had information on when our current set of deities were 'born' so to speak? It very much sounds as if the Winged Lord and the Crawling One were alone at the beginning which means some event afterward gave birth to the others. They are not like the Astrals who all came to Eos at once.

If you don't mind a pile of cloaks for company, then I am in my room.

That is correct. From the story, it seems that somehow the struggle between the two gave birth to life on the planet.

What details we have imply that life here came from other worlds. I suppose it would be like an asteroid hitting a barren planet and bringing with it bacteria that then spread across the land. Perhaps the Crawling One does not care for alien life forms?

There are some dates. However, I can't be sure how to interpret the length of time since then with what I have thus far. I do not know the meaning of the labels they use for their calendar.

If you were to ask my opinion, however... I have spent my life in the lab and experiments do not happen overnight, nor does life form quickly. Given that we are aware of an "Experiment 920194", I believe we are speaking of significant amounts of time than have occurred, both after and before the destruction of this society.

Yes, and I am beginning to wonder if the lack of balance on this planet may be tied to these two. Correct me if I am wrong, but hasn't there also been mention that the Winged Lord died leaving the Crawling One alone? Everything outside the barrier seems poisoned and decaying. It is almost as if his realm has expanded out of all control without the Winged Lord to bring balance.

[The answer came in a light knock on the door before quietly pushing it open, Ardyn obviously more than a little concerned.]

What's happened?

Yes, though their nature was very different from these. There was a strange rabbit-like figure in them, one that--in hindsight--was very clearly trying to warn us of the coming attack that would shatter the barrier for a time. I say in hindsight because the figure appeared at the end of dreams, some of which were terrible nightmares, which made it much harder to separate the meaning of said warning from everything else until it was too late.

[Nico, you're talking to a king broadcasting from a pile of cloaks. He's not going to mind the shaky camera skills.]

There seems to be a full cycle of death and rebirth here with a typical slant toward life.

[Most of the living will always fear death for it is an end to what they are, and it is difficult for them to see that it also can be the beginning of being something else.]

Two gods linked by their very nature, but doomed to spend eternity apart.

[When he hears her voice, Regis can't help but sit up a little straighter from his pile of cloaks, his eyes brightening.]

Lady Lunafreya! Noctis told me that you had returned. It is wonderful to see you doing so well!

[And not dressed in a torn, bloodstained dress. From what he knows of the coming struggle, it had been unsettling to see how close she must have been to the danger.]

Are you settling in well? Have you found a place to call your own?

[Do you know there is a certain Kingsglaive who is asking after you?]

Their actions upon the plant did, at least.

[He's not certain if 'struggle' is the right word. Perhaps, it doesn't make a difference, but they are hearing from what is a biased source. It is usually good to keep those kinds of things in mind.]

I have no doubt you are right about that. Our own world has a great amount of time that passed without specific dates assigned because 'time' did not mean what it does now. What we know as our calendar had not been invented yet. It feels as if time is passing at about the same speed here as it does at home, but that is an assumption. I am no scientist, but even I know assumptions are no substitute for facts.

Wouldn't the Crawling One consider us alien lifeforms as well? What purpose would it have for contacting us if it hates all alien lifeforms?

[Regis looks up at Ardyn and gives him a tired smile.]

Apparently whoever is behind these dreams tried to turn me into a kingsicle.

[It may be a weak joke, but he's still freezing, so it feels like an extremely relevant one.]

[He frowned slightly, sitting beside Regis and raising a careful hand to his forehead.]

Are you certain you've not fallen ill?

Do you believe it is the Crawling One that has contacted you?

If so, not all forms of contact are necessarily friendly... However, you are correct in that we can't make assumptions. We cannot even be sure if the stories themselves are true, or simply religious fiction to explain the state of the planet. It is, however, what we have to work with.

I have reviewed your video.

It does seem quite familiar to that passage that was uncovered not too long ago. Strange, that even the wording... perhaps that is how it was specifically recorded to history, as one telling a story. But whose words are they, one wonders, and what source is it that reaches out to us?

The Crawling One... perhaps it will not be long before we hear of the other, if this world is... awakening in this way. If there is a call for balance, it won't be before long that something shifts, whether we want to be pulled along or not.

[ Dreams....Some people are getting dreams. Not like the ones Ken's been having where he keeps waking up weird places, either.

The history of this world, and how it can tie into what's needed to save it, interests him enough that he feels sufficiently bold to reply to a stranger.

I believe it is a possibility.

[Considering they have just talked of fact versus assumption, he's not going to state anything as fact until they know more.]

It may be a chain of coincidence, but this is my train of thought. In the dreams, the ghosts are taking our places in our lives and then almost begging us to listen to their words. The ghosts first appeared after a breach at the factory that allowed that odd mist or dust in from the outside. If the Crawling One is the one who is responsible for the chaos outside, it may be He saw this as a chance to get His side across, especially with knowledge of His rival suddenly returning.

[Regis shakes his head slightly, though he is careful not to disturb Ardyn's hand.]

I woke up outside under the apple tree. I don't know how long it was, but I suspect it was quite some time and silk pajamas do not hold in much heat.

[They need to get her caught up on the gossip then...once that thread is done.]

I will only accept your apology if you accept my own. I apologize for not checking in on you sooner. I have been told I...fuss.

[He didn't want her to feel overwhelmed or stifled.]

Please don't worry about that. Ignis is in the same boat. He does not remember being here before either. We do not hold it against you. What would you like to know?

At home, the Cosmogony--a history of our gods and their time--is written in a similar way. Perhaps, it is in hopes that future generations would still be able to understand something so far beyond the lives they are now living?

I am wondering if it is not the Crawling One who is reaching out to us. The ghosts were in the dreams and those ghosts arrived after the incident at the factory when the breach occurred. Ghosts also belong to the realm of the dead which I suspect He rules.

It seems that way from the various passages we have come across. I am waiting to see if anyone else has had a message delivered to them that may have more information. As of right now, it sounds as if this world started with the Winged Lord and the Crawling One. Sometime afterward, the gods we know now came to be. I would be very interested in finding out when and why that happened.

[Are the Crawling One and the Winged Lord the missing gods he was first investigating? He is not sure considering how that bit of Lore was written. If they are, then the total gods they know of now is six. If they aren't...well then, who knows how many are out there?]

[ The Crawling One and the Winged One - that tracks, that's a matched pair. In that case, they are dealing with a world out of equilibrium, that can only be saved by people touc...
