I've been here for some time now.

[Don't ask him how long, he hasn't kept exact track. Just enough to note his birthday and how old he is. Roughly.]

The natives are keen to observe holidays we're familiar and unfamiliar with, which is appreciated. I can see how it would set people at ease, new and old arrivals alike.

I have noticed though that they don't seem to have anything they do to observe the new year. Although, I'm not sure any of us did anything last year either but that could be attributed to how new this all way.

Even with it so close to Christmas, it is still nice to observe the death of one year and the start of another. So I wonder, what will everyone be doing?

What traditions do you have in your world?

I didn't do too much last year, though I kind of want to do something more this year. Still working out what "more" is, though.

Back home, we tend to party for New Year's Eve. Count down to midnight and toast with champagne. If you're dating someone, you kiss at the stroke of midnight! And back in my home country, we had a tradition where we ate twelve grapes representing twelve months, making wishes. Haven't done that one in a while.

Counting down to midnight and having a toast, that one is familiar.

[The kiss too, kind of, but he'd always been too young to kiss or be kissed back in England.]

I never heard of eating grapes for each month. Do you eat them all at once or something else?

Not like, pop 'em all in your mouth at the same time, but one after the other. Gotta make your wishes.

I wonder if there's any fun parties going on here for it?

The details tend to vary from one civilization to the next. Although the turn of the year is usually marked in one manner or another.

[Head cocked to the side and a wrinkle of confusion on his forehead, Devon can't help but ask.]

Is a new year something to celebrate?

I'm not sure that there is. At least, I haven't heard anything about one yet.

Sometimes. A lot of people enjoy observing the end of one year and start of another, treating it as a chance for a new beginning or something lucky. Traditions vary by culture really.

I don't think anyone does that where I'm from.

[Of course they're also not very good at keeping track of dates or anything. At least not in the areas Devon lives or commonly visits.]

You don't do anything at all to observe the new year then?

What kind of celebrations do you have?

I probably couldn't even tell you when a new year started...

[He can't help looking a little bit embarrassed by admitting that. Honestly, he thought that was kind of normal but apparently it isn't.]

We celebrate both reaching adulthood and coming of age. A lot of places have winter and summer festivals of some sort too.

My people were long enough lived that the turning of a single year was hardly great cause for celebration.

That seems like it could be problematic.

How do you keep track of whether or not you've reached adulthood if you don't track the passing of years?

I'm sure whatever your people did find to be cause for celebration must have been terribly exciting then.

[Devon is used to being judged pretty much constantly, so he's not bothered at all.]

We do, generically I guess, but it's not a reason to celebrate or anything. It's more that I'm really bad at keeping track of dates and things. I'm on the road a lot and don't often have a lot of reason to care what day or month it is.

[Ciel does try to be better than that at least. Now.]

I suppose that would make sense. It does seem like it could be inconvenient though if anything important were to up.

Luckily, our devices here keep a good track of dates. Once your adjust to the months here.

Why wouldn't they have been? We would hardly have celebrated them, otherwise.

I have a pager if the head of my order needs me.

I'm not old enough to attend any larger clan meets or anything, so it's not like I have much of importance I would need to be aware of a date for.

How are you not old enough?

Well, you seem to judge so easily about celebrating New Years, that I could only have assumed as much.

Because how we chose to celebrate - or not celebrate - a single event should affect any other? Least of all when we might easily have lived to see thousands of years?

Magicians have more than one important age milestone. While we're considered adults at 20, we aren't considered "of age" to participate in big clan decisions until we're 50. Experience is highly valued for mages, and historically if you don't have that experience you aren't worth listening to.

Thousands of years and no year is the same. I live with someone who is immortal and yet he still celebrates because he recognizes that.

Good for you lot though that a new year is beneath your notice.

[He makes a small noise, clearly interested.]

When I come from, that's an impressive age to live to, let alone being considered 'of age.' We don't have magicians though. Are you longer lived than normal humans, then?

We do, and to magicians age equals experience. While I certainly agree with that sentiment to some extent, I see far more exceptions to that rule than other mages do.

[Of course it's easy for him to see them when he's living a pretty big exception to the rule.]

I wonder... Hey. Would it make sense to try to put one together? I mean, I liked to put together sleepovers and little celebrations back home for the group I was in. I'm sure organizing a bigger party wouldn't be too much of a hassle.

[He considers for a moment and then nods.]

I can't think of a reason it wouldn't make sense. As far as I can tell, most, if not all, worlds observe a change from one year to another. So I'm sure there would be interest. You would just need to find somewhere large enough.

[Oh yeah, Ciel is interested. It's no mystery novel but god, has he always loved learning and getting lost in fictional worlds.]

And you... do you age slowly? You're not of age yet but being longer lived, I would hope you don't end up looking like some mummified horror.

We age normally until we reach adulthood. Then everything slows way down. You probably couldn't tell how old most mages are unless they're really, really up there. Then they actually look old.

Yes, and how much of that is due to the company he happens to keep, I wonder?

[Reminds him of the grim reapers but he's not sure if they age at all. Something to ask Undertaker later, he thinks.]

I mean, the dead don't tend to be very entertaining so I don't blame him for celebrating when and where he can. And he gives me reason to want to myself.

Yes. Nobody has even heard of my world here. Of course I haven't heard of anyone else's either.

Don't worry. I don't think I could ever find questions annoying. I have an endless number of questions when it comes to magic and could keep asking them all day.
