THE MECHANICS OF MUSIC

Makoto wiped her brow, the dust floating around and reflecting the light of the old stage as she finished practice. Makoto was a talented violinist, 22 years old and successful, but something had always been missing in her life. She could never find the elegance she poured into her music when talking, her words burning the ears of everyone around her instead of bringing inspiration. She had accepted this by now, and chose not to dwell on it. At least she could reach people when she was on the stage.

After packing her violin, she left to unwind at the only other place she could feel at home, a secondhand bookshop. She had been visiting the store for years, and by now she knew where everything was and the faces of all of the regulars. Occasionally a tourist would stop by, but it was rare and in the back of her mind she wondered how it stayed in business. She pulled up her aqua hair into a messy bun, her pink eyes flickering around with familiarity, only pausing when she noticed an athletic looking woman with auburn hair and horns who she had never seen before. She didn't give it much thought, grabbing a sci fi novel she hadn't read before, and went to sit in one of the chairs in a corner where she hoped she wouldn't be noticed.

"'Scuse me?"

Makoto's first thought was the voice was talking to one of the employees, or someone else.

"Uhhhh...can you hear me???"

Nearly dropping the book in surprise, Makoto looked up and pointed to herself with a silent 'me?'. It was the same woman from before. She was dressed casually and face-to-face Makoto could see that her eyes were a warm shade of brown. The woman laughed and Makoto froze, thinking that she was laughing at her.

"Yeah, you. Could you point me in the direction of the health section? You look like you know the place."

She had no idea how someone could look like they knew the place, but Makoto nodded and stood up, realizing she forgot to bookmark where she was only after. Swallowing, she walked ahead of the redhead.

"It's...this way."

"You nervous?"

"What?" Makoto's throat felt tight. She looked over her shoulder.

"Nervous. You seem nervous. Are you shy?"

'No, I'm just not used to random beautiful strangers I just met asking me how I feel', Makoto thought, but she shook her head so hard she thought her bun might come loose.

"N-No! I'm not, this is fi-" She stopped and froze as a lock of blue hair fell in front her vision. It did come loose and now she looked crazy. She desperately hoped that a hole would open up beneath her and swallow her right now. When she pushed her hair out of her face, she was surprised to see the other woman smiling at her, and it wasn't a smile at her expense.

"I'm Yui."

"Y-Yui. I'm...Makoto."

"Makoto. Thanks for showing me around," Yui nodded over Makoto's shoulder. Oh. Apparently they were already there. Scrambling out of her way, Makoto managed a small, "Good luck. I hope you can find something you like."

"Thanks!" Came the sunny reply.

Makoto felt bittersweet about the goodbye, but headed home using her normal route. She wasn't very strong, so she tried to pay attention to her surroundings instead. Paying attention didn't stop a man dressed in flashy clothes and slimy looking gelled blonde hair from stepping in front of her, his tail flicking behind him.

"That's a nice violin," He nodded at her violin, his smile looking plastered on his face. Alarm bells went off, but Makoto nodded, trying to back away.

"Thanks..."

"I bet it's expensive,"

Oh no. Makoto felt like she had been submerged in ice as she started panicking. That violin was special, a gift, and she couldn't part with it for anything. Before she knew what she was doing, she ran. Something stopped her in her tracks and she looked down to find the man's tail wrapped around her waist, hollow spikes pointing out and digging into the fabric of her dress.

"I wouldn't do that again if I were you. If I wanted to I could send you into cardiac arrest right now."

"Please don't-!" Makoto screamed, her vision starting to blur with tears. Sharp laughter was her only answer as the man approached her. "Relax, I just want the violin. I bet it could sell for a lot of yen,"

"Why do you need yen?! You already look wealthy!"

"I've heard enough. I think I'll shut you up anyway-"

"YOU SON OF A BITCH!!!!"

The new voice was enough to make both of them freeze, but the following explosion that sent the man flying limp into the wall is what really silenced him. Fire danced around Makoto, and she was shocked speechless as she stared up to see a familiar figure, illuminated by the destructive light around her.

"YUI?!"

"Are you okay?" Yui held her hand out, and Makoto numbly took it. "What...you....that..."

"That guy over there's an heir to a successful towel company, and he's a total prick who's been doing this shit for a while. I wasn't at the library because I'm interested in books. I was there because a lot of incidents have been happening in this area, and when I saw you I got worried. You fit the description of the other targets. Blue or black hair, big eyes, cute."

Cute.

Yui sighed and continued. "I'm sorry I lied to you, but I'm not sorry I followed you. I'm actually a mechanic during the day, but I fight for justice in my free time."

Another explosion went off behind them, causing Makoto to jump, but no one looked hurt, other than...

"Is he...dead?"

Yui looked over Makoto's shoulder, touching it and making the awkward violinist blush. She groaned. "Dammit! I killed another one...sorry Makoto, you're probably really disturbed right now."

"Not really," Makoto shrugged, trying not to look at the corpse. "He was a jerk."

"You're right. But we should probably leave before the cops get here. Especially with the explosions."

"You're one of those people with superpowers," Makoto whispered, like the man who had tried stealing her violin. About a third of the population had powers that they could use, and it amazed her.

"Does it bother you?" Yui sounded off when she asked, less confident before.

"Not at all. It reminds me of fireworks."

Yui smiled brighter than a supernova and offered her hand out again. "Since I got free time, and I hear sirens...wanna go on a date with me?"

Date?! Makoto's heart was beating faster than ever before, but her body moved on its own to take Yui's hand. "O...okay."

And that was how the mechanic with a strong sense of justice fell for the awkward violinist. Makoto became more successful than ever, and her girlfriend and later wife, Yui, continued to blow everything up and murder human garbage in the name of justice.
