I have various jobs available. Pay will be reasonable for each.

1. I require a competent bodyguard to assist me with an expediton into the new territory.

2. I require someone who has video equipment and can assist with setting up and monitoring a live feed.

3. I need one writer. Preferably one that specializes in stories for kindergarten aged children. Unfortunately, beyond "The Little Emperor That Could" its following series, my repertoire of children's stories is lacking.

Erm, "The Little Emperor That Could"?

Yes, it's a classic tale told to children in Niflheim. The original story was so well-loved by one of the former princes that he requested sequels. They have stood the test of time.

How much are you paying for a bodyguard?

[Because he's the opposite of affectionate, but would kind of like some money.]

15 dora an hour with a potential bonus of 75 dora for quality work.

[A bonus he intended to give if a job was well done. It was good to stay on good terms with someone useful after all. So, he preferred to split the pay so he wouldn't waste too much on anyone who didn't perform well.

It will involve a trip to the mines in order to investigate and setup equipment. What may be in the mines is unknown, so only apply if you are confident you can do the job.

[Cool. He's never actually been paid for anything in his life and doesn't know if that's a good rate. But something is better than the nothing he has right now.]

The mines won't be a problem. I have abilities that might help in navigating them.

[For all his faults, he did have a good sense of treating employees relatively fair. He tended towards praise rather than insults, and he'd never had a reason to be a cheapskate - though he didn't give away money for no reason, either.]

I have not seen them in person myself, but from what I have heard it is like a chasm, and deep within you are able to see the barrier. Meaning we will be blocked from traveling far.

However, we do not know what else might be trapped inside with us. It is a mine, after all. On top of that, we do not know what may try to break through on that side of the barrier. I expect the trip to be completed within a day, but we may come across something unexpected that would change those plans.

You are familiar with the creatures that have been in the new area?

[A hint of concern could be heard in his voice.]

Are you planning on camping out there for awhile to gather information or is this just meant to be a short expedition to get a general feel for the new area?

I see you are not advertising for a specimen collection expert. I take it I still have the job?

Do you need anything specific? Cor and I are going through a lot of these creatures.

It's to set up equipment in order to monitor the area remotely.

[Cor. That certainly gave him pause, but they wouldn't need to be in the same area.]

Two of each. I will need another pair of the spiders. The first invasion was unexpected, and so I didn't have proper equipment set up at the time. I now have a proper place to store the carcasses, so long as they fit within a door reasonably.

[What Cor doesn't know, won't hurt Verstael.]

I will see what I can do. Are you equipped to take any live specimens of a smaller creature?

[He pauses for a moment to think.]

Would you be fine accepting help from an amateur? The world I'm from has comparable tech to the stuff here so I'm at least vaguely familiar enough with how video cameras work to set up something like that.

I have familiarity as well, so I would be willing to accept competent help.

[If necessary he could take on a role more like an 'assistant'. Verstael didn't specialize in this field, but he built dropships and robots. Video equipment was hardly outside of his range of knowledge.

And if it turned out well all the better. It never hurt to have someone around with a decent head on their shoulders.]

We would be traversing into potentially uncharted areas. I may need assistance setting up both video and transmission equipment - and we may check some of the ruins as well for potential useful materials. There should be factories in the vicinity of the mines.

All that's fine with me. I'll do my best to assist in any way I can.

[One small detail he forgot to mention is the fact he doesn't actually own any video equipment. Hopefully they aren't too expensive...]

So, how many people are going to be in our party? Having enough provisions to keep everybody's stamina up is crucial even on a short expedition. There won't be any convenient stores out there and I doubt we'll be able to find anything edible out in those ruins.

Back home there were many ruins scattered about our world that were infested with daemons. I have experience in this area - though I confess I had an army at my disposal so it was less of a hassle.

I will check the abilities of my hired guard and determine if we should need more. There are those among us who are armies in and of themselves.

Oh, I'm certain there are. My world has its own fair share of ridiculously powerful people so that doesn't surprise me.

[And unfortunately for him, he has personally experienced what it's like to be on the receiving end of their monstrous strength.]

If you would meet with me at my Information Center we can go over the equipment we will be using, as well as what we will need to build before leaving.

Sure, no problem. Just point me in the right direction and I'll make my way over.

[He posted some directions, and after that simply worked while he waited.]

[After about a half hour, Touma finally arrives at the Information Center. Unsure of what to do, he wanders about the place in search of Verstael or at least someone who can direct him to where he is.]

[The structure was a very simple one. The front was unlocked at all times, leading to a front room filled with shelves and documents, some tables and chairs, a small nook to one side with some children's texts, and, oddly, an over-sized perch in the room. Forms were by the door and recordings accompanied the materials on the shelves, but the entire thing was straightforward and plain, without any particular homey decorations.

Verstael came out of the door leading to the back room - one that was reserved for himself. He stepped out, immediately spotted the boy, and wave for him to follow with a few small flicks of his wrist.

Much like the front, the back room was more sterile than homey looking. He kept his tools there, as well as projects of various sorts. He'd moved his dropship project to the room. Like a twisted cage the shell of an engine sat to the side, large enough for a person to climb in if it had a door, with various large metal plates being fashioned nearby. It was hard work, building a dropship by hand with a fire-breathing dog as the welding tool.

He'd begun work on other things, though. All laid out on some tables he had bits of rubble he'd collected from the city. Everything from nuts and bolts that he'd recovered to twisted pieces of scrap that he could re-purpose.

He had well-worn tools neatly lined up on the walls, all in their appropriate place save for the few that were currently in use. Wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters, and all the bits and pieces one might expect of an engineer or builder. The beginnings of a laboratory was also in the works, with the likes of microscopes and a centrifuge being set up on the other side, making the room look one part engineer and one part scientist. And, if Touma was concerned, there were also a small amount of first aid supplies sitting in a clear cabinet right by the door. Given how scarce such supplies were in the city, he had a little bit of bandages and a few different bottles, but it was probably a lot more than most. Clearly from the documents in the other room and the first aid here, Verstael had an affinity for things like paper - even synthetic paper - over computers and bandages over magic to some extent. He still wrote by hand and used traditional medicine.

He had small projects in the work as well. One might recognize a homemade signal booster sitting on the table. Slightly crude, given the limitations of his current equipment, but made for testing. He'd gathered up some video equipment that was available and had clearly been working on a way to operate it from a distance, with it being partially deconstructed in order to add some parts. That was where he led Touma, as he ignored unrelated projects and went straight to the video equipment.]

For our purposes we will need to create equipment that has its own power source and can carry a signal from the new areas all the way to the city. This will allow us to monitor the mines for any potential threats. Given some of the lore that has been recently uncovered, we should be wary of what may come from within the planet.

[He paused, standing by the table and turning towards Touma with a hand on his hip, fairly relaxed.]

You are familiar with the interior of a camcorder?

[Though confident in himself and straightforward in his approach, he didn't talk down to Touma. He could see he was dealing with a boy, and if that boy had some knowledge or interest in learning, all the better.]

However, that does seem a... curious title for a story, as though it were already primed with a certain audience in mind. Is your intention more broad for future readers?

It was quite popular in my homeland. Enough that even I know it.

I've no particular limitations on what the stories could be, so long as they're of fine quality and at the appropriate reading level.

[Meaning no one could try to submit a story that used the word 'very' 500 times.]

There does seem to be a lack of such materials here already.

Your concern was toward having readings available for some of the younger ones that may get brought here, then. I know there were a few, but... I have not heard from them in some time.
