The name's Cloud Strife. I worked as a mercenary back in my world and I'm looking for a little extra work.

I can do a lot of things, not just killing monsters. Delivery work, moving heavy stuff, gathering resources, finding missing items or people, escort work, whatever your needs are. For the right price.

Payment can be discussed. Got a problem with the results? Can talk about a refund or how to fix it.

You know, the natives will hire you for those sorts of things, but if you really want to make money, you just have to hold hands and stuff.

Already know both those things. No point in offering work to just the robots.

[He could just be honest and say that he's doing it to feel helpful and productive rather than money but that doesn't fit the "strong and badass ex-SOLDIER turned merc" image!!!]

Not a lot of monsters that need killing around here. They say there's some outside the gates, but they don't let us out there.

According to this guy, it was around 8-9 months ago. The barrier broke somehow. A lot of people got sick.

[And he's trying to learn as much as he can. The more he finds out, the more he can find out whether or not he can go home.]

And for that matter, how did the barrier break?

[Yep def familiar] A little. It’s not my department but I was in the military. Picked up a little bit for missions. [it wasn’t his speciality in the army and he’s not an expert at technology like Jessie, Wedge or Biggs. But he knows a tiny bit.]

Excellent. I have a long distance camera setup that requires adjusting. It may require traversing into the expanded areas, but it may also require climbing onto the top of buildings or other physical feats.

In the meantime, it would also be possible for you to earn money by simply touching. I am available in my lab the majority of the time. So long you don't interrupt my work, a hand on the shoulder is enough.

Well, to be fair, what he's requesting doesn't seem to involve anything related to the type of stuff Hojo would do. And he doesn't know this guy has or would take part in that sort of thing. Not yet, anyway.]

I used to be in SOLDIER. Climbing buildings and stuff like that are nothing.

On 1-Lasohm-30th, the barriers you see around the city were broken and there was an invasion. A swarm of arachnids, mostly.

On 2-Lasai-15th, the barriers moved outward. The hostile forces you can witness in the expanded areas were once outside of the barrier.

We know the walls can be broken. Frankly, I was always aware of this. Any wall you can put up can be torn down. [And one day he would tear down the walls of Insomnia.] However, while there is monitoring of the walls you see around you, in the expanded areas we also discovered a mine. Within you can see the barrier, which means that only part of the mine is inside the barrier. Being in hostile territory, nothing was being done to monitor the mine shaft.

On top of which we had discovered ancients texts that implied that the poison and danger came from within the planet rather than from an outside force.

As such, I have set up a camera in order to monitor the shaft and assure that we are not invaded without warning. Unfortunately, the equipment isn't functioning properly. I only occasionally receive a visual. I have been working with my...

[What was Prompto to him? 'Son' wasn't quite the word he'd use, though he could certainly argue technicalities.] ...progeny in order to repair the setup. In short, our main goal is to establish a better connection. The equipment itself is not faulty.

So you want me to look at the equipment and see if I can help you restore the connection, right? Could give it a shot.

I was thinking more physical. Since a large portion of the area we need to work in can be perilous and equipment may need to be installed in difficult to reach places, we can use an extra hand for protection and installation.

Though I wouldn't reject another opinion, I have confidence in our engineering work. Everything is as it should be... even if our tools are not ideal, the final product should be working perfectly. [Some frustration seeped into his tone. He did know what he was doing. Prompto did as well, as far as he'd seen. But it wasn't working and he didn't know why.] There must be outside interference, and given the type of city that we're staying in that could be coming from many sources. We're hoping to find locations to set up a different path for the signal in order to avoid that. We may need to go straight through hostile domain.

You needn't worry. I don't make it a habit of unnecessarily provoking those I am relying on for protection.

You will be paid fairly. Should you do an acceptable job there may be future jobs reserved for you as well.

No set date yet. I will contact you the day previous so that you can prepare.

Even if it were though, not sure why the hell I’d need to ask for money since we already get paid to touch each other.
