Accidental Video [Open]

[There's a loud clatter and the screen turns on. The feed is pointed straight up at the sky in some alley, before a ten-year-old boy's dirt-smudged face with white hair and blue eye's appears off center, looking worried. He sits down cross-legged on the ground, picks up the communicator, and now it's visible that he's wearing a very oversized (like several xl large adult sized) gray t-shirt like a tunic or dress with shorts and sneakers.]

Oh no! Kaiba-rhya's gonna kill me! Did I break it?

[He moves the screen really close to his face so he can look at the communicator but nothing looks wrong..? But..? He doesn't know? The screen really looks weird!]

Hello? Box? Are you okay?

[ooc: If anyone responds in text, they'll be able to hear the text being read aloud by the communicator to the boy.]

Why should he, when you should be the one apologizing for this childish deception? [His tone was cold, devoid of amusement.]

Tiriaq, this isn't the voice of the tablet talking to you- it's just some loser with too much time on her hands. Time that could be better spent on re-establishing her career. [Weren't you the one complaining about not having secured a regular acting gig here, Kyoko?]

[ Jeez dude, lighten up. Kyoko slips back into her normal voice, though unlike Kaiba, she sounds pretty breezy and unbothered. ]

I was gonna let up in a minute. Kids should get a little teasing now and then.

[Lighten up and Seto Kaiba just can't exist in the same sentence. The guy tended to remain alert and on the offensive.]

Not this one. Find someone else to torment.

"Torment?" [ There's a little snort. Genuinely, she thinks that's a pretty overblown assessment. She has absolutely said worse things to children before, and he seems fine to her?? ] It's not like I made him cry.

[The fact that she is taking this so lightly isn't doing much to curb his ire. Sure maybe he was blowing this out of proportion, and maybe he had become overly possessive of the child he in reality had no claim to. The timing had been such that Tiriaq had essentially been used to fill a year long void- but not even Kaiba had fully realized or accepted this. ~~One day, he would find a way to reunite with his actual brother- but for now he was growing attached to this one~~.]

No, you just filled his head with lies that could have had disastrous consequences you haven't even considered. Much better. [Sarcasm practically dripped off of the final two words]

[ Did he already forget the part where she said she was gonna let up? She just said so like a minute ago! And "disastrous consequences"--what? What reality is this guy living in? ]

Nobody ever played with you as a child, huh. That's pretty rough.

[No, but he was beating a dead horse as the phrase goes. It should have been enough that Kyoko had decided to give up the ruse but he wanted to impress upon her why it would be in error to make a similar attempt down the line.

The consequences he was referring to was that by feeding into the kid's superstitions it might dissuade Tiriaq from using the network when he really needed it.

Also, her question might have struck a little too close to home. Outside of time spent with his brother, Seto had been isolated from positive influences as a child.]

Don't assume to know anything about me, and we both know that life isn't all fun and games. [Somewhat hypocritical from someone steeped in the gaming industry...]

[ If they were actually talking about any of this, Kyoko might have scoffed--just let the kid learn the truth! Give him some credit! If a little teasing is gonna derail his perception of reality that much, he shouldn't be using the network at all!

But alas, communication can only happen inside action brackets.

Contrary to the impression she may be making today, though, Kyoko isn't totally insensitive; she knows she probably crossed a line with that last remark. Especially if he's gonna counter with that--he might as well just say she was right, jeez. She doesn't feel bad enough to actually apologize to this guy, but she will back down. She might be a little ticked now, but she never set out to be mean today. ]

Sure, sure--but more importantly, why don't you hurry up and finish scolding me so you can pay attention to the one who needs it? Just go ahead and say it all quickly.

[ Ann's been busy cleaning while Kaiba's been snarking, and she'd heard him talking so she'd left their room to see what he was up to. Honestly, she's been standing behind him for A Hot Minute™, and she looks entirely displeased. ]

Jeez, Seto! Chill, sounds like she was just messing around! Not everything is fun and games, but not everything is so serious, either. Are you going to freak out on me when I start screwing around with the kid too?

[ It's at this point that Ann casually leans over poor Seto's shoulder so she can at least be within speaking range -- not so much to him now, but to the other girl. ]

I'm just gonna go ahead and apologize for him. I didn't hear the entire conversation, but I can only assume it wasn't a fun one, so, I'm sorry, miss.

[ Oh wow. Goodness. This is a Development.

There's just stunned silence from Kyoko's end of the feed for a moment or two, as all this happens--but she can't stay quiet after that apology. ]

Ah--no--I mean, I'm also sorry! I wasn't trying to stir up any trouble, but looking back on it, it must have seemed a little weird. I guess he's not used to that kind of thing, so...

[Actually voicing your thoughts and talking them out to achieve a lasting resolution or garner understanding? The height of insanity. No, unfortunately that sort of discussion was not to come to pass. Although he had practically admitted to her assumption about his childhood and they both knew it he would also never acknowledge that either. For as much as Kaiba like to feign that he had it all together, he was actually pretty messed up.

He was gearing up to really lay in to Kyoko one more time, when his grilfriend has the audacity to insert herself into the conversation. There was an audible huff from him, but he didn't say much to dissuade Ann. ~~You need to keep your boyfriend on a tighter leash~~]

We were just wrapping this up anyway...

[As if to detract from the "valiant" rescue]

[ The look she's shooting Seto right now, still very close over his shoulder, betrays the tone she's using. ]

[ Of course she's right. She huffs as well, though it's more of a disappointed sigh on her end. ]

I do need to apologize, because being playful doesn't mean being a bully either, y'know. Chill.

[There's so much he wants to say here to refute all this but even he has a hard time competing with one of Ann's stern looks.]

[He's still not going to concede anything in words even if he allows himself to slip out of the conversation]

[ Kyoko's pretty fine with not continuing the conversation with Kaiba, even if she surely missed out on an excellent scolding; it was pretty clear they weren't going in any productive direction. But having someone come to her defense in the middle of one of her silly arguments is downright disarming. Has this ever happened before? Ever?? Ever in her life??? She kinda doesn't know what to do now! ]

That's--um. Thank you for saying so, miss!! I'm sure he was just trying to protect the kid from a weird stranger, though... so I can't really get mad at him.

[ It's a good thing this isn't set to video, because it might be a disturbing sight to see Ann leaning in to press an appreciative kiss against Seto's cheek. Just a silent thank you for dropping the subject, even if an apology wasn't issued. ]

Yeah, no problem! Oh, you can just call me Ann, by the way. Yeah, I'm sure he was, but you were just playing, right? So, no harm, no foul! It wouldn't hurt him to lighten up a little bit, regardless.

Kyoko Mogami... [ She mumbles it automatically; manners are still important when you're flustered! ] And yes! I really was just teasing a little! That would have been a pretty lame way to actually bully someone.

It's nice to meet you, Mogami-san. [ How many times has she told Seto that you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar? Too many to count. She worries about him and his... inability to be friendly sometimes. So, damage control time it is. ] Agreed... then again, it was pretty creative! Er, from what little I caught while I was cleaning. Do you have siblings at home?

Nice to meet you!! And "Kyoko" is fine! [ Only fair if she's supposed to call her Ann!

Creative feels like a generous assessment to Kyoko, but she just laughs a little, sheepish. ]

Oh, no--I'm an only child. And now that I think about it, the only kids I've been well-acquainted with are the type who'd never fall for something that silly, so maybe my expectations were a little skewed.

Kyoko it is, then!

[ Ah-hah. A kindred spirit in being sibling-less! ]

Same, honestly. I don't have any siblings either, and generally don't interact with kids. The last one... [ ...Had been a monarch and had tried to kill them. The whole thing had been pretty sad, so, she doesn't bother to finish that sentence. ] I think it was cute... I'm afraid Tiriaq is a little... gullible at the moment. He doesn't seem like he's very well versed in technology, and I don't know a whole lot about him or where he comes from just yet. But I do know he's super adorable!

[ Kyoko does blink when that sentence trails off and never comes back, but it doesn't feel like the kind of thing she ought to chase. ]

He is a pretty cute kid. [ That had been part of why she was tempted to play with him in the first place! ] But... next time, I think I'd better make it even more obvious that I'm teasing.
