[The video opens on a bare wall and to the sound of very, very corny fanfare. Then Taako's voice cuts in with the sound of applause.]

Yes, yes, welcome one and all to the greatest day of your lives. Today we have a real treat for you folks, so pull up a chair, take a load off and enjoy this banned text we've managed to procure.

[He clears his throat and a puppet appears on the screen - a non-descript looking human priest wearing dark robes and a blue sash around his neck. The voices that read the following lines are similar, but not the same and anyone who knows both Lup and Taako can probably tell it's the twins taking turns to read the passages. People who don't, however, might have a hard time telling them apart.]

"I used to have a lady love,
she journeyed through the sea,"

[A new puppet appears - a beautiful female mermaid with hair that falls just past her breasts. She slides up from the bottom of the screen and the priest turns to her, fawning all over her.]

"Her fins were as the mourning dove,
a mated pair were we.
Our bodies tangled, hand in glove,
a queen and devotee,"

[As the poem progresses, the priest does some...very not PG-13 things to the mermaid puppet. Eventually, the mermaid pushes the priest away, looking tired.]

"But she was called to rise above,
our bond not meant to be."

[Here the mermaid "puppet" flips a double middle finger at the priest and backflips into the sea, leaving him drenched in water.]

"Though I endure, bereft, belove,
I have her guarantee,
I'll be the one she's thinking of,
a little dove told me."

[The priest pines and waits by the water, pantomiming the lament of a forlorn lover as a bird lands next to him, rolling its eyes. The puppet show ends with a curtain drawing across the screen and then the video shuts off. Taako's voice cuts back in once the video is gone.]

Yeah, so the people here? Raunchy as hell. I love it. But then some people were, y'know, boring and said things like--

[Lup's voice takes over smoothly like they're still the same person talking.]

"If any other colonies can hear this message, please respond. This is Havenwell. We're still alive. The city is safe. We will come get you, no matter how far you are. This is not an automated message. Please respond." That there's a radio transmission from "Colony #56'07'4TM", which, obviously, is home sweet home. Not the most interesting, but I won't deny that the archive visits have been… informative.

Anyone else get something fun?

Soon as I get my magic kid, you are so on!

[Whoops, that was a look. A familiar one at that- someone who's seen some shit. She's quiet for a long moment, and when she speaks again, her voice is a little softer.]

We might just be overthinking this. They were trying to save their world, right? It'd be more natural to bury them somewhere, give them back to the soil. Burning would be a waste. And if it took them a while to realize they'd made a mistake, whatever they needed to fix things would've been long gone just the same.

[He likes that they're going to settle this by letting children beat each other up. This is the honorable way to fight, honestly.]

Yuh-huh, good luck catching up to Ango McDango. He's a smart little shit and he's going to blow your magic kid outta the water.

[Danger, Will Robinson. That sounds almost like pride??? In a child???]

You just kinda...stop caring after awhile, probably. There's that part of it, too. Most people aren't meant to live past an apocalypse after all.

[He snorts and laughs a little.]

This why you're always so curious about, uh, everything though? Those 'emergencies' you gotta address?

If I was in possession of that amount of equipment I assure you I'd be doing much more.

[How nice it would be to have his lab back instead of being offered the student labs here. It almost felt like being a child again.]

Perhaps. I suppose we're all partially a product of the environments we grew up in. Had I grown up in comfort, maybe I would not be as keen on unearthing the potential threats we face.

But I did not, and that will likely be a fortunate thing.

[It's why it hits so close to hypothetical home. When so much of existence is dedicated to not being able to care, the return curve is so much more of a staggering blow when it's not erring on the side of having seen so much that nothing disturbs them.

Perhaps. Even so... if all is to be considered, we were not brought here for them, but for the world itself, according to the will of these... gods.

[Yeah, she can recognize what counts as pride from Taako of all people, and she's pleased as hell but also not about to point it out.]

[Considering the other conversation they've had about magic and all? Taako's kiiinda glad he doesn't have that equipment. He isn't sure what this guy would do with it, or how he'd use the knowledge he gained. He's an interesting one, that's for sure, but Taako is inherently paranoid.]

I mean fair. I grew up in a bad environment too, which is why I peace the fuck outta anything remotely dangerous at the first sign or hint or even a whiff of shit hitting the fan.

So you trying to keep up your experiments or whatever here? Do they even have good labs? I have very little faith after seeing the replicators.

Pfft yeah, but any god worth their salt is gonna want us to fix the whole problem, not just plug up the dam and go about our days.

Unless they mean to keep us here forever and in that case? You know what I'll do to get out of here.

It is hard to know what they truly want as yet, beyond the energy we provide them.

[That was the one unshakable fact; anything else was only enough to tally up the guesses, and the variety of possibility within them. One could put together an entire series of boards pointing to all manner of theories for any of the information they held now.]

We have our own goals that must not be jeopardized.

[Getting out of there, together, with their progress, even if all memories might not hold at the destination, but that was a different problem.]

Until we can get our hands on more information all we have is conjecture. They may have an entire process that varies from the technology we are aware of.

[He sighs heavily, reaching up to rub at the bridge of his nose. They're going in circles and the don't have enough information to come to any conclusions on their own.]

[Hang on while he sputters a bit.]

I-it's how things are! He may have written that for himself and it got into someone else hands!

[He wants to die]

Very likely. I've seen enough different worlds to know that most of the time, there isn't much in the way of universal similarities between them. Expect to do a lot more research before we understand this place properly.

I have every intention of researching as much as we can but with the limited access to information it is... a bit frustrating.

I feel you, bud. But if a bunch of strangers were dropped on my doorstep, I wouldn't let them in and share all of my secrets, either. All they have to go on is that the gods dragged us here. They don't know our motives, what kind of ethics we follow, what we might do with the info we learn here...

It's going to take a while before we make headway through the proper channels. Either we park our butts and stay patient about it, or we start coming up with alternatives.

No, but I'm not sure I'd want to be someone they might go to for answers.

I'm sure there's plenty of people who could give 'em The Talk if it was ever actually necessary. You don't need to take on every responsibility just because you like kids.

It seems we took different paths. In order to conquer our challenges we must understand them. And, that is what I did. Even back home there were those who didn't understand my work, but it is essential for saving lives.

[Which was why he took scathing remark #70,351 so well. Nothing he hadn't heard before.]

Without access to my labs or anything to test on it's difficult to continue all of my work. This is a different war and it will require different methods. ...My work was important nonetheless, so I will continue when I am able. If I were able to complete it successfully here, then I would be well-prepared to change the tides of war when I returned home. Just because I am away for the moment doesn't change the importance of protecting our soldiers.

As for the labs, they have only allowed me access to that which would be comparable to a student lab. I'm sure they have far better. Considering the experiments they've conducted, I know they would not be able to progress with the equipment I have seen. It's difficult to know the exact scale of what they have available while they are hiding it, however.

I'm the one that decided to take responsibility for them when they come here though. If they want to stay.

[So, wouldn't it be her responsibility?]
